The Circus Come to Sutton in the Middle of WWII

The newspaper declared that even in the war year of 1944, the citizens deserved entertainment. Sutton officials invited the circus.

The Roller Rink Rolled out of Town in 1944

Sutton had an outdoor rollerskating rink in 1944 until the August 3, 1944 issue of The Sutton News reported that the Roller Rink had Rolled out of town.

Lost Hand - Missing in Action - Decorations in WWII

Sutton had almost a dozen men killed in World War II. Many of us remember the names of most of them. Besides the deaths, there were the wounded and the injuries. Even training was hazardous.

And there were the missing in action reports forcing families to wait for the next news. And the honors.

Early County Threshing Crew

This threshing crew photo comes from south of Sutton - the Edgar/Ong area actually. The photo is undated. 

The key gives the names and the name of the "duty" position on the threshing crew. Reading from the left: Jimmie Hill (in buggy), Oliver Cassell (water wagon), Sam Washburn (Engineer), Alex Devitt (Sep. Tend. (Separator tender?)), Dave Cassell (Sep. Tend. & my grandfather), Joe Washburn (cook), The "Rackers" were Art Hill, Henry Shipley, Andy Anderson, Clarence Smock, John vickery, Walt Woodhead, C. Jordan and Hwd Jordan. The "Pitchers" were Ben Jordan, Earn Hill, Earl Smock and Adolph Gemmer. "Wagon men" were Andrew Olson and Fred Woodhead.

Oliver Cassell's team was Fred & Frank.

H. Shipley had Tom & Jerry

C. Smock's horses were Kid & Nell

John Vickery brought Dan & Bess to the crew.

The Sutton Mustang school newspaper was the product of Miss Stella Softley's journalism class for years. Jerry Pearson was the editor in the 1954-1955 school year.

2nd Lt Morris Bauer Missing in Action - June 21, 1944

2nd Lt. Morris Bauer, one-time Sutton lad, was reported missing in France of German. He was the co-pilot of a B-24 crew and the brother of Les Bauer.   

As of this writing, I do not know the rest of the story, though he did survive the war and seems to have been listed as "Maurice" in some records.
