Area Round Barns in 1970
The county paper did a story on the round barns in the area in 1970.
This round barn on the Reuben Sell farm east of Sutton was featured in Nebraska History magazine along with other Clay County round barns. Clay and Lancaster Counties each had four round barns, more than any other Nebraska counties.
There were a total of 36 round barns in the state. In the upper left here is the best preserved Clay County round barn in 1970. It was on the Dana Gail Schliep farm a mile south of Fairfield and was in use. The barn in the upper right was on the Earl Fate farm southwest of Clay Center. It was believed to have been built in 1914 by H. M. Graham. The barn at the lower left was located three miles east of Edgar and was built in 1910.
The fourth barn in this collage is clearly not round but it made the cut for the article as a brick barn, solid brick. Not a usual thing.
The article accompanying the photo of the four barns on June 25, 1970 goes into detail about these barns.
The headline in the article is was kind of an unfortunate sign of the times, or something.
Six School Children Died in Truck-School Bus Accident - 1970 near Davenport
This accident near Davenport in June 1970 killed six children between the ages of 6 and 11.
This seems early for tall-corn-blind-rural-intersections to have contributed, but we all need to be on top of that danger every summer.

Harvard POW's Letter to his Parents After Release
Pfc. Clinton Hohnstein wrote this letter to his Harvard parents immediately after being liberated from a German prisoner of war camp. The letter appeared in The Harvard Courier on May 31, 1945.

The 1970 Sutton Memorial Day Program
The 1970 Memorial Day Program included a list of veterans from various wars and members of other patriotic organizations.
The lists are incomplete, especially the World War II list.
Mrs. Beulah Ochsner was the Queen of the Daughters of the Nile in 1970

The Sutton Museum has Mrs. Ochsner's dress from this occasion on display along with Dr. Ochsner's dental memorabilia.

Tom Osborne - Speaker at 1995 Athletic Banquet
Nebraska head football coach Tom Osborne was the speaker at the 1995 Athletic Banquet in Sutton. This was on May 9th, just a few months after his #1 Huskers beat #3 Miami in the Orange Bowl to capture his first National Championship.
Spring 1920 County Teachers Exam Schedule
This schedule for county teacher exams appeared in the Sutton Register on May 27, 1920. The battery of tests covered two days and a variety of subjects. It appears there were three skill levels to the exam for certification or some other formal designation - First Grade, Second Grade, and Life.

The key to identify these women is on the back of the photo - almost all are listed providing good material for investigation into their stories.
FOX HOLLOW Golf Course Opened May 28, 1995
Sutton's Fox Hollow Golf Course held its Opening Day on May 28, 1995. The club held an auction to determine the first 36 golfers to take the course.
