Wayne Ross of Harvard Rec'd the Purple Heart 52 Years Late
Senator James Exxon presented Harvard's Wayne Ross with his Purple Heart in Omaha.

Obituary of Henry & Alice Vauck - Killed 11 Nov 1957 at Sutton Downtown RR Crossing
The automatic railroad crossing guards in the middle of downtown Sutton were installed after this accident.
Henry Vauck served as Clay County Judge for several years. His brother in law, Roy Oakley served as County Clerk for 33 years. Both men had lost a leg in childhood accidents, both turning those losses into the opportunity to receive an education, teach in rural schools, and serve as county officials.
Henry and Alice Vauck were highly valued members of the Sutton community and their tragic loss that afternoon hit the town of Sutton hard.

Dr. Leininger Returns to Nebraska
Dr. Madeline Leininger left her position at Wayne State University in Detroit in August 1995 and moved to Omaha to resume her career.

Helping Dr. Leininger celebrate this occasion were, across the back, Kathleen Leininger, (niece) of Houston; Dr. Bernard Leininger (brother) of Chicago; Johnnie and Paul Leininger (brother) from Texas; Eulalia (sister) and Carl Hansen of Edgar, and Paul Leininger Jr. from Burlingame, CA. In front, Dr. Madeline Leininger, Frances (sister) and Dr. Leo Ambrose of Omaha.
Dr. Leininger was raised in rural Clay County, taught in a country school, and had a distinguished career in the nursing profession.

Dist. No. 55 Photo from Along the County Line
This photo of the District No 55 school house appears on page 194 of "Along the County Line" by the Sheridan sisters.
This school house now sits on North Way Avenue in Sutton as part of the Sutton Museum. We're looking to restore the sign you see in this photo.
Dog Races Were an Item in Sutton in the 1900's
This photo appears in the Dog Races story in the Sheridan sisters' book "Along the County Line" on page 151.
What were the early Sutton dog races all about? Think greyhounds, live rabbits, and pari-mutual betting. Got it?

This Sutton-related historical novel traces the story of a specific group of Germans from Russia. This story is based on the family history of the author, Cleon Ochsner, a name that gives away the Sutton connection.

Sutton Medical Clinic Story in 1995
This story recounts the background of the Sutton Medical Clinic. The story was in The Clay County News on July 27, 1995.
1920 Letter from Sutton Folk in Blackfoot, Idaho
As people moved on from Sutton and the population thinned out, there were a few common destinations. Many Swedes followed friends and neighbors to the orchards of Turlock, California. Germans participated in a substantial migration to Lodi, California where many likely went into grape growing, especially the fine zinfandel grape and its distinctive wine.
Among the lesser destination was Blackfoot, Idaho which attracted several families. This 1920 letter is from R. H. Stewart tells of a Sutton picnic held by several families in Blackfoot.
Blackfoot is in the middle of the potato growing region and claims to be the Potato Capital. The 2010 census put the population at 10,828.

Harvest Festival Schedule for 1970
Sutton's summer celebration was called the "Harvest Festival" in 1970 and was held on Monday and Tuesday.
There was a time when the carnival alternated between the north and south sides each year.
