March 1943 - 50 Clay County Men Inducted

March 1943 saw the army build-up call for 50 men from Clay County. In an article at the same time, an Army official was quoted as saying the country would have to reverse the policy of not drafting fathers if a 10,000,000-man army was to be a reality.

On Aug 23, 1943, Ralph Claus wrote in Les Bauer's journal while home on leave. Service #3747540, with the 1063rd Quartermaster Co. at Ft. Dix, New Jersey.

On 14 Jul 1943, Pvt. Cleo D. Stevens wrote in Les Bauer's journal Co. I, 20th A. R. APO 444, Camp Campbell, KY. He likely had completed basic training; the APO address indicated an overseas destination.

On 14 Jul 1943, Pvt. Donald R. Detwiler and Pvt. Merredith Monson both wrote in Les Bauer's journal- Detwiler, Co. A and Monson, Co. G, 20th Armed Regiment, 20th Armed Division, APO 444, Camp Campbell, KY. They likely had completed basic training; the APO address indicated an overseas destination.
